York TMD

York TMD was a Traction Maintenance Depot located at York, England.

Background

There were several locomotive depots at York: York North (also known as York Leeman Road) was ex-North Eastern Railway. Within the triangle of lines bounded by York railway station, Holgate Junction and York North Junction, were three further depots, one each ex-Great Northern Railway, Midland Railway and North Eastern Railway, collectively known as York South.[1]

York North was opened by the North Eastern Railway, and was closed to steam traction in 1967.[2] The BR depot code allotted in 1949 was 50A.[2] Following renovation, the premises were occupied by the National Railway Museum which opened in 1975.[3]
